Please Forgive Me! http://jameshalephotography.com/blog/2017/2/apologies First off I want to say "I'm Sorry and I Apologize."

When I started in photography many, many years ago, I always dreamed of owning my own photography business.  Yes, I was taken in by the "rock star" mentality of what it was to be a photographer.  Back then, it took special equipment and processing to produce photos, but what I didn't realize was the "back room" processes of photography.  I said that like it was a bad thing.... not at all.... the "back room" of photography to which I'm referring to is the business side of photography.  What does it take to run a business?  What paperwork do you need?  What processes should you have in place?

Well, when I started thinking about it for real a couple years ago, I grabbed a business license and started in.  Soon, I became overwhelmed with the amount of time that it took "outside of the studio" to process the photographs and do the "business" of photography.  You can think of the photography business as an iceberg.  Very beautiful to look at above the water, but the 7/8 of the iceberg below the waterline is what you have to watch out for... just ask the people on the Titanic!

In the last few months I've taken a hard look at what I've been doing and have been doing a lot of figuring and planning.  I still don't have it down yet, but I'm working on it.  In the past I've been plagued with slow delivery times, something which has really killed me.  I could make excuses for it such as I'm baby-sitting my grandchildren, or my other obligations have been keeping me too busy, or ...or... or... or... But the fact of the matter is, I've dropped the ball.  For this, I apologize most profusely.  I've been taking a lot of classes and doing a lot of reading on business and the "process" of photography and feel that I am started to develop a better feel for my business.

Please don't give up on me yet because photography is my first love and I'm working on making it my main focus.

The Number 1 Reason to Hire a Professional Photographer! http://jameshalephotography.com/blog/2016/10/the-number-1-reason-to-hire-a-professional-photographer You've waited for it and it's finally here!

The Number #1 Reason to Hire a Professional Photographer.....

I believe that the number one reason to hire a professional photographer is that once that day is over or that time-frame has passed, it is now a precious memory and you will want the best images possible of those memories.  This is even more important for those moments that cannot be relived, like weddings, maternity images, newborn images and other important milestones.   Please make sure you capture the best images possible, so you will always look at those images and smile warmly.   These photos will take you back to that time or that day, to a place where you can almost smell the flowers and touch the perfect newborn skin.   It is definitely worth hiring the best you can afford to capture those precious memories.

The #2 Reason to Hire a Professional Photographer.....

Professional photographers have a lot of training and experience. It takes years and a lot of hard work to hone photography skills. Your photographer will have spent a lot of time and money educating themselves on how to use compose your images and light them well to create a lovely gallery of images for you to choose from.

Investing in your home. One of the goals of most sessions is to produce images that will be enlarged and framed for the wall. This is an investment in your home and can enhance a room. You spend a lot of time and hard earned money furnishing your room, finishing it off with professional  images of your family only makes sense.

Attention to detail. Your photographer will pay attention to the detail. With newborn photography, babies are posed right down to the position of their hands. Blankets are smoothed out. Fabrics are ironed. Background clutter is removed. The time of day is carefully planned. Every part of the image and your session is carefully planned to ensure that you get the best images possible.

The #7 Reason to Hire a Professional Photographer.....

Following on from point eight, your photographer will know how to use their equipment. Most of my clients that talk about their cameras will also admit to me that they turn their camera to auto and let their camera do the work. Modern cameras and phones can take great images on auto, but things can go very wrong too. This can result in dark images, blurry images or the on board flash popping up to light your subject. Your photographer will know how to use their equipment and will have manual control over their camera. They will be choosing their ISO, shutter speed and f-stop to ensure the image is well exposed. They will know their equipment in and out.

The #8 Reason to Hire a Professional Photographer.....

Quality of the equipment. Most of my clients own a DSLR. The fact that they hire me shows that they value photography, so many of them have their own camera as well. Although cameras are expensive, the cameras and lenses that your photographer owns cannot compare in quality to ordinary consumer cameras. Most clients love images where the subject is clear but the background is blurry. This is called bokeh (pronounced like bouquet of flowers). In order to achieve good bokeh, you need superior equipment. Your photographer will have all the equipment required to produce beautiful images, that most ordinary households won’t have.

Your session will be thought out and styled.  Unlike family snapshots, when you book your photography session your photographer will guide you on how to style the session. This will involve choosing the right location to suit your style and family and will also cover what to wear and how to prepare. This single point can make a huge difference in how professional your images will look.

The Top 10 Reasons to Hire a Professional Photographer http://jameshalephotography.com/blog/2016/10/the-top-10-reasons-to-hire-a-professional-photographer Hello all....

I'm going to share with you some of the reasons I think you should hire a professional photographer to capture those special moments in your life.  And no, I'm not doing this to tell you to hire me, but before you let a memory slip by, you might think about these points.  And with a nod to David Letterman, I'm going to give them to you in reverse order.  If you don't want to wait for the blog posts, then you can always check them out at http://jameshalephotography.com/top-10-reasons-to-hire-a-professional-photographer.

The #10 Reason to Hire a Professional Photographer.....

You will be in the images. In most families, there is usually a 'designated photographer’, someone who has a camera and a little experience taking photographs.  This means that there are rarely any photos of the 'designated photographer' in the albums. Or, the photos of 'designated photographer' aren’t so flattering as they have been taken by another member of the family that hasn’t practiced much.  By hiring a professional photographer, everyone gets to be in the photos.

Steampunk Tea Party Photo Shoot http://jameshalephotography.com/blog/2016/4/steampunk-tea-party-photo-shoot Hello all! JHP_7217Steampunk Lady

I'm announcing a Steampunk Tea Party photo shoot coming up at the end of August 2016!  If you're interested in participating, either as a model, a clothing designer, a set designer, makeup artist, hair stylist or even photographer, please let me know!  I've setup a website specifically for this photo shoot and all of the other details will be posted there, along with a link to submit your information for possible inclusion in the photo session.

One of the things that I have been thinking about for a long time is a book that I put together, and this is that idea!  From the photo session, each model will be photographed and each piece of clothing, accessories, hair, makeup and everything else that goes into this photo shoot will be included in this book!  If you are a clothing designer, this is your chance to get some photos of your clothing modeled for free!  Here's what everyone will get that participates:

  • Models: You will get a disk of digital images that can be used on your online portfolios and for sharing on Facebook, LinkedIn, etc..  You will also get to choose 1 8x10 print of one of your images.  You will also be able to purchase the finished book at cost.
  • Makeup Artists and Hair Stylist:  You will get a disk of digital images of your work that can be used on your online portfolios and for sharing on Facebook, LinkedIn, etc..  You will also get a quality 8x10 montage of your work that was done on the photo shoot.  You will also be able to purchase the finished book at cost.
  • Clothing Designers:  You will get a disk of digital images that can be used on your online portfolios and for sharing on Facebook, LinkedIn, etc..  However, in your case we will be taking product photos of each item that are loaned to us for the photo shoot, which you will be able to use in your online stores as well as the modeled clothing that is worn.  You will also receive one (1) copy of the final printed book from the photo shoot.  Each photograph will be credited and noted as to what items were used, so you can use it in your store to show customers.
  • Photographers:  If you participate as a product photographer, you will also get a DVD of the images that you had taken so that you can use them in digital form to share or to put in online portfolios.

And just to make it more interesting, I'm planning on having a junior film crew there putting together a film of the whole process which will, or should be available online after it has been finished.

That about all for now... oh... wait... the website address:

See you in the pictures!

Local Photographer Attends International Photographic Convention http://jameshalephotography.com/blog/2016/1/ppas-imagingusa-2016-conference Press Release - January 2016

New things are in store for clients of James Hale Photography after James Hale's attendance at Imaging USA.

Kansas City, Missouri - James Hale of James Hale Photography expanded his skills by attending Imaging USA, the premier professional photographic convention in the United States.  He joined thousands of industry professionals attending this event January 10-12, 2016 in Atlanta, Georgia.

"I was truly overwhelmed by the amount of information available at this year's convention.  This was my first, and it definitely won't be my last.  I attended some classes that will help me with everything from posing, to lighting to operating my business more efficently and I'm looking forward to learning more next year in San Antonio!  I was also truly amazed that there were 21 different countries represented by photographers at this year's convention.", said James Hale.

“Over the years, we have attended many conventions, but the highlight of each year was and still is attending Imaging USA,” adds PPA President Michael Timmons, M.Photog.M.Artist.Cr., CPP, F-ASP. “The education everyone has access to here is nearly unlimited, from speaker after speaker presenting their messages, to when friends come together and share.”

Imaging USA is the longest-running international photographic convention, tradeshow and image exhibition in the world. The event dates back to 1869, when PPA began organizing its annual convention and tradeshow, ran by professional photographers for professional photographers.

More than 10,000 photography enthusiasts descended upon Atlanta for three days of photography education and inspiration as well as some exclusive photography-related shopping.

Highlights of this year’s event included the three-day Imaging Expo tradeshow, featuring more than 600 booths, giving photographers the opportunity to demo and purchase the latest products at deeply discounted and tradeshow-only prices. The event also hosted more than one hundred speeches, presentations and hands-on demonstrations by some of the most respected names in the industry. Photographers also found mentoring opportunities, portfolio reviews and 10,000+ photographers to network with and create career-spanning relationships—a real bonus for photographers, who typically work for themselves.

The photography learning and networking extravaganza helps photographers like James Hale become better photographers and businesspeople, allowing them to better serve their clients in the process. For more information on Imaging USA visit ImagingUSA.org.

I’m Looking for Photographers http://jameshalephotography.com/blog/2015/8/I-m-Looking-for-Photographers Do you like the outdoors? Rain or shine? Do you like to take photographs? Do you like supporting great causes? Why…do you ask? I need a couple photographers to help me out taking photos at this year’s BikeMS. It’s the largest bicycling event in the midwest with the most riders participating of all the rides in the greater Kansas City area.

I need someone to help me take action photos with me during the 2-day event. If you are free either Saturday September 19th or Sunday, September 20th and would like to help out a great cause, then send me an email. You need to be at least 18, have a valid driver’s license and insurance and be shooting with a digital camera, preferably a DLSR. You don’t need any long lenses, unless you have them but you will need to be comfortable driving around bicyclist’s on the road.

You will need to sign up as a volunteer on the MS Website (I’ll give you all that information) and you will have to submit to a background check as part of it. But I need to know soon! I can streamline your application process if you want to help out. All photos will be copyrighted under James Hale Photography but will list you as photographer in the EXIF information on the photos.

Contact me soon if you would like to help!

Why You Should Still Hire a Professional Photographer http://jameshalephotography.com/blog/2015/8/Why-You-Should-Still-Hire-a-Professional-Photographer I was perusing photography websites a few days ago and ran across this article.  I had thought about writing something similar, but it kept getting away from me.  It is written by Ginny Felch and you can look at this article on her website by clicking on the title below. It may have been written a couple of years ago, but it’s still relevant today and I think it was written very well and I agree with it 100%.  I think this should be required reading for anyone who purchases any type of camera.  I actually had someone tell me that I charged too much and that a friend who had an iPhone was going to take their family portraits.  I wonder what happened to them?  I’ve reprinted Ginny’s article below, but you can always read it on her website as well.

Why You Should Still Hire a Professional Photographer

By Ginny Felch

Apr 17, 2012, 06:11

As a Master of Photography, awarded through PPA, I am very aware of what it takes to be a skilled photographer.

After studying with many of the best contemporary photographers, I understand the value of seeking knowledge from the best of the best. I can attest to the money and time spent to refine and redefine my skills and creativity.

But this is not about me! In the last few years, the value of a fine photograph has seemingly decreased. Everyone IS his/her own photographer and spontaneity seems to be the state of the art.

I’m not saying “Bah Humbug,” at all! I am wildly involved and enthusiastic about all the newest technologies and ability for everyone to make a good EXPOSURE. That in itself is creative and fun, and involves just about everyone who wishes to dive in.

I want to just make a point about why spending a little or a lot of money to invest in a portrait by a tried and true professional is important and worth it.

A professional photographer is NOT

  • Someone who just got a hot new camera
  • Someone who loves Photoshop
  • Someone who gives away her/his work for next to nothing
  • Someone who has gotten some compliments from friends about pretty photos she has taken
  • Someone who gives away JPEGs for your Facebook page

A portrait photographer takes pride in her work and spends money and time to study and learn all the old and new skills required of a great photographer.

Do you like to eat where a good chef cooks? Do you go to a good dentist and doctor to assure the best health? Do you spend money on cafe au lait every day for a tasty jolt?

Perhaps by any standard, hiring a portrait photographer is a bit of a luxury and an elective expense. However, down the road when your children and grandchildren look back, they will appreciate your taking the time and making an investment in their family genealogy and heritage.

Don’t mean to sound like your grandmother who walked through snow to school, but my home WAS destroyed by a fire and the portraits were the greatest loss.

I always chuckle when people complain about spending lots of money for wedding photographs, when they don’t wince at what they spend for clothing, flowers and food. Everything disappears immediately after the wedding except the photographs and the memories.

How many times have you heard about someone getting a real deal and hating the results? It is tragic. A professional photographer will not let you down. His reputation depends on it.

A portrait photographer worth their weight in gold will:

  • Be an artist in their own right
  • Be able to create a FAMILY portrait that will hold its value and integrity through generations. You can’t even BEGIN to do that unless you are ambidextrous and have a tripod and self-timer.
  • Have the kind of personality and psyche that will EVOKE comfort and natural expressions.
  • Allow you to remove yourself from the equation as a mom or dad who is always popping out a camera, thus eliciting surprising, natural and spontaneous expressions.
  • Know about dynamic composition
  • Know about SEEING THE LIGHT and make use of it
  • Make you look as good as you think you look or better without looking like a plastic rendition of yourself. That “disease” is spreading like wildfire.
  • Have a great relationship with their lab to insure the highest quality archival print.

Staying up with the times doesn’t mean eliminating values from the past. Of course you want your photographer to stay current on trends and technology, but what is most important is their VISION and skill as an ARTIST.

Oh No…. Another Change?? http://jameshalephotography.com/blog/2015/7/Oh-No-Another-Change Ok, ok.  I’m a true Gemini which means that I’m never satisfied with the way things are.  I always am on the lookout for a better way or new way to do things that are interesting.  Yes, yes….I know it’s exasperating for those that try to keep up with me, but nonetheless, it’s what I do.  I’ve changed the way the site looks again…. sort of.  What I’m trying to do is give you, who look at my photos, the best viewing experience possible.  I’ve taken a look at countless examples and keep changing my mind on what to do.  So… in UN-Gemini fashion, I’m going to ask you what I should do?

Here’s your assignment:  Take a look at photos on the web (other than Google or Yahoo or search engine photos) and see which photos are displayed to you the best.  Format, colors, backgrounds, etc..  Do you like it against a dark or light background?  I personally always thought dark, but someone just recently told me that it’s best to view them against a light background because it’s easier on the eyes.  Really?  Hmm… I guess it’s possible.

Give me a website address, or a description, or some clue as to how you like to view photos.  To some, it probably doesn’t matter so much, but to others, they’ll skip a page rather than look at photos in a format they don’t like.  Ok, you have your assignment.  Report cards are at the end of the semester!

Email is back up! http://jameshalephotography.com/blog/2015/7/Email-is-back-up I think all the issues with the website have been resolved.  The techs at Namecheap.com are some of the best I’ve found to work with!  If you’re poking around the website and you get an error or if something doesn’t work right, please let me know about it. I promise I’ll try to keep things the same for a little while… but don’t hold me to it!

Website is Back Up! http://jameshalephotography.com/blog/2015/7/Website-is-Back-Up Well, the website is back up, but the email seems to be suffering a similar fate. So far as people try to email me, it rejects it saying that it doesn’t recognize me with a 550 error. And I was on the verge of recommending Namecheap.com as a provider too!

Seriously, they’ve always been good about what they do and it’s a fast service…. but something got caught in the cogs. Message me on Facebook for now if you need to contact me or give me a call. I’ll let you know when it’s back online. Thanks!

New Website Design http://jameshalephotography.com/blog/2015/4/New-Website-Design Hello all.  I decided I didn’t like the way the old website was laid out and liked the new format much better.  It has a lot of options available to me which will help me to portray my work a little better as well as help you get around.  As always, please don’t hesitate to tell me when something is wrong or doesn’t work right and if you have problems getting to your Gallery, by all means, let me know.

I’m not a blogger, but I do have a tendency to write long sometimes and you’ll see this in the posts eventually.  Right now I’m just laying the framework for the new website.  I kind of like the colors, but I’ll leave it up to you.  What colors do you think look better online?  Dark or light colors?  A variety of colors indicating certain things?  Or a set of colors that is consistent across the website?
